Dear Friends,

Tika is one of the young chimpanzee males rescued by the sanctuary and he is the oldest chimp of the nursery group.

He really enjoys the enrichment set every day by Fabienne and we were glad to see he had found himself a thin wooden stick in order to reach the small peanuts that were hidden inside a trunk.

Tika worked this way instinctively, which shows us he knows using tools can be very useful to collect food.

Dear Friends,

Our sanctuary was offered pediatric treatments against flu: FERVEX powder which is a combination of Paracetamol and Vitamine C to provide kids just when the first signs of flu appear.

Our very kind donor is a French friend named Franck Goddard who is an ape lover regularly helping other great apes sanctuaries in Africa. This donation will help us a lot since winter has started very early this year as well as runny noses and sneezing

Kina, eye issues – again !

Dear All,

Remember, end of last year, I told you the story of young female KINA undergoing severe eye issues.

Today, again, her left eye is showing some irritation, and the iris as well as the pupil are getting white. Our vet being abroad, we try to give Kina the best treatments and are keeping her indoors, isolated from her friends but also from the dusty and windy climate we have during this dry period of the year…

hunting till the last treat

Dear Friends,

Every morning, food is hidden in the open air facilities so that the chimps search and ‘hunt’ for their food. This activity sometimes last for hours and keeps them all extremely busy as food is hidden in different places every day.

But then comes the moment nothing is left and the chimps keep on searching… This part of the game can last for hours too …

Chimp (short) escape

Yes, although measures are taken to ensure security at J.A.C.K. it can sometimes occur that chimps get too clever to find the best way to be outside the facilities!!!

Two days ago, Tong, the youngest chimpanzee of our main group, managed to escape. A bar of the night enclosure got broken and the chimp just went through the bars. But not too long as our team managed to get him with the others very fast…

The night quarters J.A.C.K. built in 2008 had very thin bars. We didn’t have enough money then to buy thicker bars and we were in need to urgently build extra facilities as our boarders were getting bigger! Franck knew from the beginning these facilities were too ‘weak’ for growing chimps and therefore decided last year to add an extra facility to provide security.

Today, thanks to Franck, Tongo couldn’t go very far ! He was stranded in between the old facility and the new one, could enjoy a few moments of feeling ‘free’ as he was directed back immediately to his group thanks to our team. Why Tongo was the only one to escape? Just because he is the smallest in size and that the others just couldn’t pass through the small space offered by the broken bar…

Luna settled in

Dear Friends,

Baby Luna was introduced last year in August. Today, she is the youngest chimp of her group and most of her chimp friends do like her and it’s mainly Africa and Elia, the two eldest females of the group who take good care of her!

We are very happy to see her enjoying life among all her friends! Luna is groing so fast and well!

J.A.C.K. not only rescues chimps!

Dear All,

Yes, I believe this small bat was lucky! It was found stuck inside our office the other day and Franck managed to catch it in order to relesae it at the sanctuary.

We released it just before dark to be sure it could still fly… and flew straight up in the trees!!!

The next day, no bat to be seen; so it meant it had gone… This good news made our day!

‘traffic jam’ on termite hill

Dear Friends of J.A.C.K.,

Yesterday, most of the youngsters of the chimp nursery group were gathered around the fake termite hill because we had organised their favourite treat inside: some honey and some strawberry jam …

All had small sticks to ‘fish’ for the treat except young female Maïka who decided she would steal Dian’s…

This of course ended in a fight as Dian didn’t want to share her place nor the thin stick she had found to fish for honey….

Dear Friends,

The project of the green garden has been mainly sponsored by a South African company: MARKET TO AFRICA. Veggies are now growing everywhere but not in sufficient quantities as, remember, 120 kgs of food are needed every day for the chimpanzee and galago boarders living and rescued by J.A.C.K. !The aim of the green house is to reduce the charges of the sanctuary; we really hope this will happen soon as the soil is extremely bad and we need to bring in new soil added with natural compost….
