updates on our Christmas fundraising

Remember, early December last year, we launched a fundraising appeal to collect money for a Jungle Gym for the chimp teenagers group of JACK.

thank you playground

Today, we can say that the total amount ($5,524) to build this huge play tower for Chita and his friends has been collected since JACK fundraised along with its French charity  “Les Amis de JACK”  during the latest Festive Season.

YES! JACK is extremely happy this project will come true! The Jungle Gym is a high play tower which will not only provide enrichment to the teenagers group but it will also protect them  from the harshness of the climate (blazing sun, heavy rains) by offering the chimpanzees some shade and shelter . The sanctuary intends to start the constructions very soon and will, of course, share pictures and updates.

Again JACK and “Les Amis de JACK” would like to thank the different Friends who have given all their trust as well as their precious financial support to make this dream come true. Remember, JACK lives on donations only and relies on the generosity of its Friends to provide its boarders with the best care!

Many, many thanks to:

  • Carole V.  who launched the fundraising event in France together with our Charity “Les Amis de JACK”;
  • the Sweden Chimpanzee Trust and its Board members who decided they would be part of this Christmas event for the chimps!
  • our great Donors whose aid was crucial : (in alpabetical order) Alexandra G, Amy M, Andrew & Candy G, Carine LT, Catherine H, Corinna MS, David S, Eva C, Francesca B, Geneviève H, Harry H,  Jean-Charles D, Julie B, Karim M,  Louise Q, Lyna R, Marc H, Mireille F,  Oliver T, Sébastien M, Suzanne M,  Valérie L, Valérie S, Véronique T, et Wanda H.
  • one of our adopters who has been following JACK sanctuary for so many years: Marie-Odile L. Her love for her adopted friend MAYA has no limits and Maire-Odile therefore decided she would help the sanctuary finalize this playground project!
  • our wonderful Friends from all over the world who organized/participated to events  to support JACK:

=> Lucette P (France)  who participated to 2 different Christmas events jointly  organised by shop managers Mr & Mrs Kahn from MEDOR & Co

=> Patti C  and her sister Gail (USA) who attended 2 different Christmas crafts  fairs and sold their handmade necklaces.  Usually assisted by Gail,  Patti has been supporting our sanctuary for years now and her gorgeous necklaces have a great success and do help our chimps too!

=> Joanne P (Australia) who created a fundraising event in her country to help Chita & his mates get the Jungle Gym.

The building of the play tower should not last more than 10 days and we of course will keep you updated !

Dear Donors, without your precious support JACK wouldn’t be able to give its orphans the best!

So, thank YOU again and again for THEM!

update on fundraising ‘money for security’

We have great news for today as some Friends of JACK, worried about the chimps’ security, have done their best to help out financially to enable us buy the needed materials to start fixing barbed wire on top of the walls located at the edge of our sanctuary.

Know that works have started thanks to your wonderful support. So far, 550 USD and 100 Euros have been collected; this is already a huge amount of money which is helping J.A.C.K. a lot!

Many thanks to Cherie B, Eva C, Tania F, Kelly J, Patti C, Fran B, Tanis S, Wanda H, Oliver T, Véronique T and Valérie L  for their great support! Without your Love and wish to be part of this security project, J.A.C.K. wouldn’t have been able to buy and fix the first barbed wires!!!

Money for security

A few nights ago, people illegaly entered the sanctuary and seemed interested in the sleeping orphans. J.A.C.K. was lucky its night team managed to chase these unexpected visitors away. But what if they came back? Why were they looking inside the night rooms?  What were their intentions?

J.A.C.K. has therefore decided to enforce security and wishes to put barbed  wire on the different walls at the edge of the sanctuary. Total cost will be of 900 USD (puchase of barbed wire + metallic bars to fix the wire on the wall). This amount doesn’t represent much for some people, but for J.A.C.K. it does!  This is a huge amount of money for a NGO living only on donations!!

Today, 3 US Friends of J.A.C.K. have taken the great initiative of  helping  our sanctuary.

Yes, Patti C., Fran B. and Tanis S.  have donated 125 USD which is already a good start! If you want to do the same. If you wish to help out, please,  donate via our secure Paypal account.

Thank you so much Patti, Fran and Tanis for this wonderful initiative which we hope will encourage more Friends to participate to the improvement of security at J.A.C.K.! Thank you for Mata and his friends!

volunteering at J.A.C.K.

Since a few of our friends are publishing pictures of their visit and/or stay at J.A.C.K. we would like to add extra information regarding volunteering at our Sanctuary.

So far, J.A.C.K. has started building part of its volunteer camp and more works and money are needed to finish the whole camp. This is the reason why we can’t currently accommodate friends from abroad and why we haven’t started our volunteer program made of friends coming from abroad…..

However, people living in Lubumbashi and wishing to give a hand are always welcome ; this is why Karine is working with us these days before her departure in midth of 2015.

Best Wishes from J.A.C.K.

Many thanks to all our Friends how follow and support us!

Without your help, J.A.C.K. wouldn’t be able to give THEM the best!

Thank YOU for THEM!

Merry Christmas,

audio enrichment

The chimps living at J.A.C.K. have so far been used to food and to visual enrichment.

Today, Karine, a friend of JACK residing in Lubumbashi, is volunteering 3 times a week and she offers the chimps a variety of audio enrichment made of different types of music thanks to an audio adaptor set on her  phone.

Some of the chimps are too curious and can sit hours staring at Karine while others don’t mind at all.

Tika, one of the young teenager chimps, lays quietly in front of Karine as if the classical melodies calm him down. People who know Tika won’t believe their eyes when seeing him behaving like this since Tika is a very active teenager always  playing the tough guy to impress!

So, we can say that Karine’s efforts are positive and we do encourage her to continue this good job as captive chimpanzees need enrichment and really need attention!

Thank you Karine for your precious help and ideas!!

Maya not well

Maya is a young chimp female from the main group of orphans living at the Sanctuary. She hasn’t been doing very well recently: she lost a lot of fur, she seemed lethargic and looked depressed.

24.08.14 (3)-001

It was therefore decided to sedate her to get some blood samples. The lab results showed a serious anaemia and it was suggested Maya should have a particular diet essentially based on calories, proteines and iron. We isolated Maya for observation and we do offer her different types of food such as dry fruit (prunes, apricots, dates), cabbage, spinach, etc in addition to her normal meals. Also, Maya has  daily proteins through Sustagen Hospital Formula and we managed to find imported lentils that we mix in her mielie meal balls. Once Maya will be doing a lot better, more blood samples will have to be taken and more lab analyses will have to be done.

28.08.14 (3)

Maya is a strong chimp and we are convinved she’ll  feel better soon.

We would like to thank 4 good friends of J.A.C.K. who have helped us so far with Maya: Kelly Susan J., who sent us the Sustagen protein powder, Marie-Odile L and Carine L.T. who are Maya’s adopters, and Vanina C. who donated funds covering lab and pharmacy fees. We also want to thank Gladys C., our current local volunteer, who is preparing Maya’s proteins every day as well her daily enrichment items.

We hope to come back soon with good news regarding Maya,

Thank you,

haysacks for J.A.C.K.

A good friend of J.A.C.K., Corine, has just offered our sanctuary about 200 sacks of hay she had previously cut for her horse. Corine mentioned the hay had no more nutriments for her horse (too dry & too old) and because she knew we offer our hairy friends fresh and dry grass every day so that they can build their nests, she gave us all the hay she had left in her shed.

The chimps of course were extremely surprised to see such quality of bedding but it didn’t take long before they started building their nests!

Last night, baby Kaly apparently found the hay extremely comfortable to sit on and to have her last meal of the day before sleeping…

As previously said, it’s winter here and this wonderful donation will keep the chimps warm at night!

Many thanks, Corine, for caring so much about THEM !
